Back in the days you could stumble upon a badly fitted BC in a belt ransom it and move on in your cruiser frig whatever. you warped into a gatecamp or somehow else died.. so what you just made 20 rifter setups ransoming that BC. Now you could keep pirating for weeks. The idea was to fly cheap and still earn isk. Cause everyone looses a ship sometime..
today ppl pirating have so much isk and sp you see HACs all around low sec. for such players its almost useless ransoming a t1 setup bc. so they just kill it, I also don't see the fun doing that, just as you said. Its a whole lot better like it was some year ago. Sure u can still find a BC but its just so rare these days. Pirating in a HAC ,though effective, doesn't yield you much isk if you consider what you might loose doing it.
Like yesterday I jumped through a gate in a carcal, I ran to take a wiss, when I came back I just uncloaked some seconds ago and a guy from veto was there in his cerberus, he killed me. He jumped to next system and engaged someone else and then he logged. I had my helios in that sytem so I probed him out and killed him, his bounty was enough to cover the caracal loss, not to mention his mods. A pith-small booster got destroyed. So about 150-200mill loss for that guy. How long will it take him to negate that loss through (belt) piracy or pvp even? quite some time I guess.
Another example some dude long ago posting his "loot of the week" if I'm exaggerating a lot now the value of the loot might have been 100 mill. I looked at battleclinic and in that same week this guy lost 3 absolutions in same systems as he pirated in. well thats like -600 mill probably. Did this guy pirate? Yes, was he a good, efficient pirate? No.
Key is making more isk then you loose while PvPing as much as possible, that usually involves cheap setups, and thats the charm of piracy for me.
